The Marine Treasures collection was born from a fascination with the hidden jewels of the Caribbean Sea - treasures far more extraordinary than gold coins or pirate legends. Beneath the turquoise waters of the Caribbean exists an ecosystem filled with vivid color, rare marine life, delicate coral structures, and remarkable oceanic shells that have inspired explorers, collectors, and naturalists for centuries.
Every element within this collection was carefully researched and hand-drawn in our Colorado studio to celebrate the beauty, rarity, and wonder of Caribbean marine life through wearable art. The Lion’s Paw Scallop shell was chosen for its dramatic sculptural beauty and deep coral-orange tones. Often regarded as one of the Caribbean’s most striking scallop shells, its bold ridges and fan-like form resemble royal adornment or ceremonial jewels. Within the artwork, strands of baroque pearls frame the design - referencing both pirate treasure and the timeless elegance of heirloom jewelry collected from the sea.
The Queen Conch shell is another iconic symbol of the Caribbean. Revered throughout the islands for centuries, the Queen Conch is deeply connected to Caribbean culture, cuisine, and coastal heritage. Its soft blush-pink interior and graceful spiral silhouette make it one of the most recognizable and beloved shells in tropical waters. The shell’s sculptural elegance became an important visual anchor within the collection.
The starfish featured throughout the artwork are inspired by Oreaster reticulatus, commonly known as the cushion sea star. Native to the Caribbean and tropical western Atlantic, this species is recognized for its sculptural texture, warm coral-red tones, and distinctive webbed surface patterns. Unlike delicate starfish often depicted in marine illustrations, the cushion sea star possesses a bold, architectural presence that adds depth and movement to the composition.
The coral structures woven throughout the scarves are inspired in part by Stylaster roseus, sometimes referred to as rose lace coral. With its delicate branching formations and intricate lace-like appearance, this coral brings softness and refinement to the artwork while reflecting the extraordinary biodiversity of Caribbean reef ecosystems.
Together, these elements create a layered visual narrative inspired by the real treasures of the Caribbean Sea - not jewels hidden in pirate chests - although they are whimsically added along the coral reefs - but the extraordinary fauna, flora, shells, and coral formations that exist beneath the ocean’s surface.
Every design in the Marine Treasures collection is copyright protected, and entirely hand-drawn and in the PeppaRose Colorado studio. Our designs are then sustainably printed and crafted in Italy by highly skilled artisans. The collection reflects our belief that travel can inspire deeper appreciation for the beauty, rarity, and fragility of the natural world.
Adding movement and energy to the collection are some of the Caribbean’s most iconic reef fish. The luminous Queen Angelfish, with its electric blues and vivid yellow accents, is considered one of the most recognizable and regal fish of the tropical western Atlantic and Caribbean reefs. Alongside it swims the Royal Gramma Basslet — a tiny yet brilliantly colored fish known for its striking magenta and canary-yellow body. Native to the Caribbean Sea, this species is treasured for its vivid coloration and graceful movement among coral crevices. The Spotlight Parrotfish adds another layer of Caribbean identity to the artwork. Parrotfish play a critical ecological role within coral reef systems, helping maintain reef health by grazing algae from coral surfaces. Their shimmering iridescent scales and constantly shifting colors make them among the most visually captivating fish found throughout Caribbean waters.
The collection also explores the extraordinary beauty of marine invertebrates and oceanic shells found within the Caribbean ecosystem.
One of the most intriguing inspirations is the Janthina janthina, often known as the violet sea snail or purple storm snail. This remarkable sea snail drifts across warm tropical oceans, floating upside down at the ocean’s surface on delicate rafts of self-created air bubbles. Its paper-thin shell glows in shades of violet and lavender, appearing almost surreal against the blue sea. The Janthina is one of nature’s most unusual ocean dwellers, living at the delicate boundary between sea and sky.
